With less than a 4 weeks to go until the Frankfurt motor show, Volkswagen has revealed details of its flagship hatchback, the Golf R.
This high-performance version of the Mk7 Golf will use a tuned version of the turbocharged, 2.0-litre petrol engine from the GTI, which is now producing 296bhp and 280lb ft of torque.
Using VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system and the dual-clutch DSG gearbox, the Golf R accelerates from 0-62mph in 4.9sec (that time drops to 5.3sec for models equipped with a manual gearbox). The top speed is limited to the standard 155mph.
The Golf R is likely to cost about £32,000 when it goes on sale in the UK next spring.
