The car in this video is a 1997 McLaren F1 GTR, the final instalment of McLaren’s F1 GTRs, purpose-built for Grand Touring competition. More specifically, it’s the “Longtail” version, with a longer tail (obviously), longer nose and a wider rear wing, all designed to provide maximum downforce. There are no engine noises, no burnouts, no blistering laps of some world-famous circuit and no flames shooting from its many tailpipes. This video is strictly to show off the positively gorgeous looks of a car that took on the giants at Le Mans, and many other big races, as well.
At Le Mans in 1997, two of the six 1997-spec F1 GTRs that entered competition fared well, taking second and third, finishing behind the Porsche LMP. This particular F1 GTR, the “Gulf Team Davidoff” version, took a 21-lap victory at the 6 Hours of Vallelunga in 1997, and an 11-lap victory during the 1998 Italian GT season at the 1,000 km of Monza.
