Formula1 Thermal Imaging Cameras

Following this weekend’s Grand Prix at Monza we saw the introduction of F1 thermal imaging cameras. Which gives us a great view of exactly how the tyres warm up and cool down throughout the race.

Another thing we learnt was that thermal imaging is awesome for crashes. Below you can see Paul Di Resta, through no fault of anyone but his own, lock up his brakes on the first corner of the first lap. That sent him off, but before going off we saw his tyres light up white-hot on the new thermal imaging system that F1 is using. Brilliant I’ll enjoy watching this over the rest of the races.
